On a remote Bavarian farm, shy Anni longs for a better life as her foster father’s delusions increasingly shut her off from the outside world.

The story

Anni, a shy young woman, lives with her foster father, the old Moserbauer, on a remote farm in the Bavarian countryside. She works at a sausage factory by day and, at home, keeps house, assembles bicycle bells as piecework, and watches television. Anni refuses to believe the farm must define her whole future; when she looks at the moon, she imagines a better life elsewhere. As the impoverished Moserbauer increasingly shuts her off from the outside world and draws her into his religious delusions, Anni’s hopes are challenged. A possible escape appears in Vitus, a delivery driver who promises freedom beyond the nearly bankrupt farm.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

On the farm of the old, gnarled Moserbauer lives his foster daughter Anni, a retiring, shy girl who works herself to the bone here, somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the remotest Bavarian countryside. The weather-beaten old man is deeply at odds with his surroundings and with modernity; his hatred of the world’s innovations has led him into religious delusions. But Anni refuses to accept that this is all her life, that it is to be her entire future. She works by day in a sausage factory and, after returning home in the evening, runs the household, assembles bicycle bells as piecework at home, and otherwise sits in front of the television. Only when she looks up at the sky and sees the moon—the “naked orb” of the title—does she realize that somewhere out there, another, better life is waiting for her, indeed must be waiting for her! As the impoverished Moserbauer increasingly shuts Anni off from the outside world and draws her into his delusions, the little bit of happiness she has dreamed and hoped for comes to her in the form of a stout young man. His name is Vitus, and he works as a delivery driver for a home-work company. He promises Anni the freedom she longs for, a new world beyond the narrow confines of the nearly bankrupt farm. She goes out with Vitus, dances at the village disco, and the two fall in love and marry against the will of the gnarled old man, who now cuts himself off completely from the outside world. Finally, the Moserbauer succumbs entirely to madness when he realizes that he has lost Anni, and is committed to a locked institution.
