A sculptor whose work is often rejected struggles to find a willing model for his new sculpture.
The story
The film follows a few weeks in the life of Kemmel, a fictional sculptor whose work is often rejected by those around him. He does not always make things easy for himself or others. A relief he made and gave to his village ends up in a storeroom. For a new sculpture, he struggles to find a suitable model. He eventually approaches Hannes, a laborer, but Hannes refuses to pose; practical-minded, he feels he has little in common with the artist.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film depicts a few weeks in the life of the (fictional) sculptor Kemmel. He does not always make things easy for himself or for those around him. Moreover, many of his works are not accepted by the people around him. For example, a relief he created and gave to his village ends up in a storeroom. For his new project, he wants to create a sculpture, but has trouble finding the right model. When he finally finds one in Hannes, a laborer, Hannes does not want to pose. Very down-to-earth by nature, he feels he has nothing in common with the artist. After some effort to persuade him, Kemmel nevertheless manages to convince Hannes. As they work, the two men grow closer. But this work does not help Kemmel emerge from his crisis either, and he fails to do so. A visit to his home village brings him a new commission: he is to make a sculpture for the local sports club’s anniversary. Kemmel accepts. But when the work is unveiled, it is initially rejected. The club officials had imagined a clothed footballer, but instead they got a nude runner. Only gradually do they grow accustomed to the work.
