Full plot (contains spoilers)
Shocked by the Titanic’s collision with an iceberg and its subsequent sinking in 1912, leading scientists, engineers, and financiers consider how to connect North America and Europe by new means, without having to take the obviously dangerous sea route. The sensational solution: build a railway beneath the ocean! A colossal project (as the alternate title suggests), it encounters numerous obstacles from the outset—from human envious rivals as well as the forces of nature—and brings saboteurs and schemers into play. As the Tunnel-Railway Co. carries out excavation work for a rail link deep on the ocean floor, numerous incidents occur, bringing the project more than once to the brink of failure.
