After right-wing extremists leave him comatose, Sikumoya wakes seeing himself as the perfect German and is appointed an integration officer for the NPO.
The story
Sikumoya, a political refugee from the Congo, is preparing for German citizenship with his girlfriend Moni, who is expecting their first child. A trained teacher, he hopes to return to his former profession, but faces racism in Leipzig and prejudice from Moni’s parents. After right-wing extremists beat him unconscious, he falls into a coma. When he wakes in hospital, he sees himself as the perfect German and sympathizes with the National Patriots of the East (NPO). The party chairman appoints him the party’s integration officer, hoping to distract from its ideology and the threat of a ban, while Moni tries to bring him back to his senses.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sikumoya came to Germany from the Congo as a political refugee and, with the support of his girlfriend Moni, is now preparing to become a German citizen. They are both expecting their first child in a few months. The trained teacher hopes he will be able to return to his former profession afterward. He is bothered by the fact that in his new home, Leipzig, he is constantly exposed to racism and to stares from strangers in many places. Moni’s parents are also prejudiced against him, so he makes a special effort to behave in a typically German way. After right-wing extremists beat him unconscious while hunting him down, he falls into a coma. When he wakes up in the hospital, he sees himself as the perfect German. He is annoyed that many others do not embrace German culture, speak poor German, or know much about German cultural heritage. He sympathizes with the National Patriots of the East (NPO), and after a conversation with the party chairman, Eberlein, he is promptly appointed the NPO’s integration officer. Eberlein’s ploy is meant to distract from the party’s ideology and the threat of a ban. But Sikumoya refuses to be used as a passive pawn; with his newly awakened radicalism, he tries to win parts of the party over to his side. Moni, meanwhile, does everything she can to bring him back to his senses. Sikumoya continues to crack down on what is un-German: he orders passport checks on the street and even has long-term unemployed Germans deported abroad. He does not spare his comrades, either, repeatedly accusing them of acting in an un-German way; he is already eyeing the party chairmanship himself. Sikumoya organizes a re-education session for un-German Germans in front of a hardware store, which Eberlein’s son Steve later claims as his own idea. A fight breaks out, and Sikumoya is knocked unconscious again. When he wakes the next morning, he has changed once more and sees himself again as Sikumoya the Congolese. He takes revenge on the NPO members, ties up Eberlein, and helps himself to the money in the party coffers. He gets into his car and drives away.
