The story
Margitta Gronau sings with Himmelblau, an amateur band led by her best friend Hans, while working in her mother’s fashion boutique. Margitta sees the job as temporary, but her mother hopes she will train to take over the business. Hans has quit his job to pursue a professional career for the band. Unable to get a bank loan for new instruments, he accepts a private loan from coal merchant Horst Hertel and offers Margitta’s mother’s car as collateral without her knowledge. The loan is due within a year. Meanwhile, the still-unknown band struggles to secure performances beyond wedding celebrations, and its members grow frustrated.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Margitta Gronau is the singer and frontwoman of Himmelblau, an amateur band recently formed. In the evenings, she performs with the band in clubs and at various events. During the day, Margitta works in her mother’s fashion boutique. Her mother is less than pleased about the band. Margitta sees her job in the boutique as only a brief stopover in her life. Her mother, on the other hand, wants her to pursue further training so that she can take over the boutique one day. Margitta’s best friend Hans leads the amateur band. Hans dreams of taking the band from amateur status to the professional ranks, and has even quit his job for that reason. But the road to fame and a successful career is long and difficult. Hans needs money to buy new instruments for the band, but he doesn’t have any, and no bank is willing to lend him such a large sum. Then the coal merchant Horst Hertel helps him by giving him a private loan, and Hans is able to finance the instruments. But when Horst asks Hans for collateral for the loan, Hans can think of nothing else at short notice but to offer Margitta’s mother’s Wartburg 353. Margitta’s mother initially knows nothing about this. Hans has to repay the loan to Horst within a year. For Hans, this literally begins a race against time. Things do not go well for the still-unknown band, and Hans is unable to arrange any major gigs apart from wedding celebrations. As a result, he repeatedly has to face the frustration of the five band members: Margitta, Kalle, Norbert, Manne and Micky. Since Hans is now also in debt to Herbert Krause, in addition to Horst Hertel, and his debts are spiraling further and further out of control, he believes he has no choice but to get money by criminal means. Over time, Hans deceives and lies to more and more people who actually like and respect him. His schemes work for quite a while, but eventually Hans has to admit to himself that he has abused the trust of all his friends and acquaintances. When Hertel and Krause each file a complaint against Hans, Lieutenant Thomas Grawe of the criminal police begins investigating the case. Grawe exposes Hans’s fraud, and his lifelong dream of becoming a lucky Hans is finally over. Hans is sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay 30,000 marks in damages.
