In a famine-struck land where hunger turns people into birds, Jola searches for a legendary porridge pot after her sister becomes a dove.

The story

A severe famine has overtaken the land, and people miraculously turn into birds rather than die of hunger. After one of Jola’s sisters becomes a dove, Jola sets out to find a legendary pot that cooks porridge. In the forest, she meets Moira, a forest woman who gives her a piece of the broken pot. The pot bears parts of a sentence, but Jola cannot read them, so she must rely on others to help her understand the clues as she continues her search.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

There is great hunger in the land, and as a result people miraculously turn into birds instead of dying of starvation. After one of Jola’s sisters turns into a dove, Jola sets out in search of the legendary pot that cooks porridge. In the forest, she meets the forest woman Moira, who gives her a piece of the broken pot. The pieces of a sentence are written on the pot, but Jola herself cannot read. Only when an old bard reads the first part of the sentence to her and sings an unknown verse does Jola learn that the next shard is on a mountain. On the way, she meets Veit, the brother of Count Ruben von Hammerlitz, who is being pursued but does not reveal his identity to her. Jola eventually finds the second shard and has Veit read the newly found part of the sentence to her. She then goes to the Mist Woman, who will only hand over the final shard once Jola makes a choice: either turn her sister and her mother, who has also since become a bird, back into humans, or take the shard and thus obtain the magic pot. With a heavy heart, she chooses the pot, but she does not know the little rhyme that makes it cook. The words on the little pot are no help, so she has to go back to the forest woman. From her, Jola learns the magic words. When the pursuers catch up with Veit, Jola learns his true identity and feels betrayed. The pursuers steal the pot from her and take it to the count. Jola reaches the count because he is holding her two remaining siblings captive. To get them released, Jola must reveal the magic words, “Little pot, cook!” and at last the pot begins cooking porridge. But the count does not know how to make the pot stop, and so porridge pours through the entire castle. The count and the pursuers are swept out of the castle by the vast amount of porridge and all the way into the forest. There, the forest woman turns them into three clucking chickens. Jola retrieves her pot and, with the words “Little pot, stop!”, ends the flood of porridge and takes the pot back to her poor village. Veit has stayed with her and helps her distribute the food. Now no one has to go hungry, and Jola’s mother, her little sister, and everyone else whom hunger had turned into birds return to human form.
