Full plot (contains spoilers)

On [date unspecified], 25-year-old Richard Oetker, the son of an industrialist, is abducted from the car park of Weihenstephan University, where he is studying. His ordeal lasts 47 hours: locked inside a wooden box, he is seriously injured by an electric shock. In the meantime, the kidnapper extorts nearly 21 million Deutschmarks from the victim’s wealthy family and escapes with the money. Oetker is released in a forest near Munich. The police and prosecutors investigate for two years before arresting the suspected kidnapper, an auto mechanic called Dieter Cilov in the film, and bringing him to trial. Cilov denies the crime, but the court sentences him to 15 years in prison. But one question remains: where is the ransom? Helmut Bauer (called Georg Kufbach in the film), head of the LKA’s special investigative commission, continues to investigate.
