The story
A Dresden family’s relationships are strained when the father’s past entanglement with the Stasi comes to light.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film largely follows the plot of the novel, which centers on the story of the Hoffmann family in Dresden’s educated middle-class milieu from 1982 to 1989. Some details from the novel are omitted from the film, such as the affair between the father, Richard Hoffmann, and Christian’s girlfriend, Reina. Instead, the discovery of Richard’s past entanglement with the Stasi is portrayed as the sole trigger for the rift between father and son. For cinematic reasons, Meno Rohde’s diary entries were also omitted entirely.
