In a Cinderella-like tale, Marie faces a cruel new stepmother in her father’s household.

The story

Berger’s film follows the framework of the Brothers Grimm’s Cinderella tale. Marie von Cucoli’s widowed father marries Countess Benrat, who brings her daughters, Violante and Estella, into the family. The countess spoils her own daughters like princesses but treats Marie abominably. Marie’s father, described as small and gaunt, cannot stand up to his domineering new wife, leaving Marie under the countess’s control in her own home.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Berger’s staging closely follows the framework of the Brothers Grimm’s Cinderella tale. In this story, the lead character is named Marie von Cucoli. Her widowed father has married again, to Countess Benrat, who brings two daughters of her own into the marriage, Violante and Estella. While she spoils her own daughters like princesses, Marie is henceforth treated abominably by her new mistress of the house. Herr von Cucoli is a small, gaunt man and cannot stand up to his domineering new wife. It takes the determined intervention of Marie’s godmother, with the help of her servant, to put an end to Marie’s wretched existence. From then on, the pretty girl also finds happiness in love: at a ball, she meets the handsome Crown Prince Anselm Franz, who immediately falls in love with Marie. Thanks to magical powers, the two are brought together, and the reign of terror imposed by Countess Benrat and her two spoiled daughters comes to an abrupt end.
