The story

A hardhearted Greek king is married to the gentle, widely loved Queen Arete. Shortly before Arete gives birth, an adviser persuades the king to revive an ancient law requiring the royal couple’s first child to be a boy; if the child is a girl, she must be killed and the queen disgraced. Distraught after giving birth to a daughter, Arete secretly exchanges her baby with the son born at the same time to Manto, the gardener, and presents the king with the boy he demanded. The king then leaves on a sea voyage, setting out into a storm.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Once upon a time, there was a very strict and hardhearted Greek king. He was married to the gentle Arete, who was loved by all the people. Shortly before the queen was due to give birth, an adviser persuaded the king to proclaim an ancient law anew. The law stated that the royal couple’s first child had to be a boy; if it was a girl, she would be killed, and shame and disgrace would fall upon the queen. The queen was distraught when she gave birth to a girl. To save her child’s life, she exchanged her daughter for the son born at the same time to Manto, the gardener. In this way, she was able to present her husband with the son he had demanded. The king set out on a sea voyage and was caught in a storm. He was stranded on the island of Mytia, where he stayed for a long time. There, the king became a friend to animals and a gardener, and returned to his kingdom only after ten years, just as the false prince was about to be crowned.
