Christof Wackernagel, a man full of humor, idealism, and plans, lives in Bamako, the capital of Mali in West Africa, with the musician Madou Coulibaly and his housekeeper, Assa. He also works on projects and books there, and in the evenings he puts on street concerts with the musician Madou Coulibaly. One of his projects is to set up a whole-grain bakery locally with the Malians, since he misses dark bread in Africa. However, the oven brought all the way from Germany explodes, and the project fails. His nephew Jonas Grosch accompanies him on his dark-bread project and in everyday life in Africa, along with his camera operator, Miriam Troescher. His uncle also repeatedly tells him about his life in Mali and earlier in Germany: how he joined the RAF and then went underground, his time in prison, his break with the RAF, and his encounter with Dutch police officer Herman van Hoogen, who arrested him in Amsterdam in 1977 after a shootout and later wrote a letter to the Higher Regional Court in support of Wackernagel’s early release from prison.
