Full plot (contains spoilers)
The young figure-skating talent Liesl accidentally lands a part in a new revue at the Palace Theatre because of a mix-up. The role was actually intended for Lu Panther, the untalented girlfriend of the theatre owner, Wildner. After a series of mishaps, Wildner closes the theatre just before the premiere. But set designer Ernst Eder promptly moves the performance to the ice rink owned by Liesl’s uncle. The revue on ice now opens with Vienna’s Prater as its backdrop and the tune “Buy Yourself a Colorful Balloon.” In a series of fairy-tale scenes, Spain is then celebrated on the ice with the song “Come to the Land of My Longing, Come to Spain”; Hungary with the song “Play Your Fiddle”; and a nightclub with a jazz orchestra, titled “Yes, the Rhythm.” The performance is a huge success, and of course Ernst and Liesl get together too.
