The story
Architect Lea Winter has just won a major building contract when she discovers she is pregnant by her married boss, Klaus Arnheim, with whom she has had a long affair. Klaus believes abortion is the only solution, so Lea travels to Ireland to think through her decision in peace. There she meets Brian O’Casey, a single father and fisherman who once made a name for himself locally as a musician and now plays piano at her hotel. Their chance encounters initially irritate them both, but after Lea rescues Brian’s young son Patrick from drowning and is taken to hospital, Brian begins looking after her. As he shares his home country with her, their feelings begin to change.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Life could not be better for architect Lea Winter: she has just won a major building contract, which will allow her to bring one of her own designs to life for the first time. But shortly afterward, she discovers that she is pregnant. The father is her married boss, Klaus Arnheim, with whom she has been having an affair for five years. When Lea tells him the truth, he is overwhelmed by the situation and thinks an abortion is the only solution. Lea packs her things and travels to Ireland to make a decision in peace. There, she meets Brian O’Casey, a single father and fisherman who plays piano in her hotel in his spare time and made a name for himself as a musician in the region in the past. At first, they get on each other’s nerves during their chance encounters. But after Lea rescues Brian’s young son Patrick from drowning and then has to go to the hospital, Brian begins to look after her. He picks her up from the hospital and happens to find out that she is pregnant. Over the next few days, he shows her the fascinating rainbows his homeland is known for, takes her out on his fishing boat, and goes on outings with her. They both begin to fall in love, without admitting it to each other. After several fruitless phone calls, Klaus tracks Lea down in Ireland, sends her roses, and eventually turns up at the hotel himself, much to her surprise. He tells Lea that he would stand by their child if she really wants to keep it. He also offers to work on their relationship, but still has no intention of leaving his family. Lea reacts defensively; she has realized that an affair is no longer enough for her and that she misses sharing everyday life with her partner. She ends their relationship. Klaus, who recently met Brian, quickly concludes that she is in love with the Irishman, though Lea does not admit it. Later, Klaus gets drunk out of frustration and picks a fight with Brian, who remains calm. Lea is taken to the hospital with cramps, and in that moment she realizes just how attached she already is to her unborn child. She makes her final decision to keep it. After breaking up with Klaus, Lea increasingly opens herself up to Brian. They make plans together, such as attending a wedding where Brian is to be best man. But then Patrick’s mother, Rebecca, unexpectedly comes home. Though her job usually keeps her traveling around the world and she and Brian have been separated for a long time, she suddenly promises Patrick that from now on she will stay with him, and acts like Brian’s wife at the wedding. Lea, who believes she has once again become involved with a man who is already committed, is hurt and leaves. Before she goes, however, she wants to see the rainbow one more time. Brian finds her there, clears up the misunderstanding, and confesses his love for Lea. Lea lists the possibilities for her future: pursuing her career with a nanny, or taking a break from work for the child. Brian adds another option—that he can offer her a home in Ireland and wait for her there while she works around the world. The two kiss for the first time.
