The story

In 1907, Hans Castorp, a young man from a patrician Hamburg family, visits his cousin at an exclusive sanatorium in Davos, Switzerland, hoping to recover after completing his engineering degree. His cousin has tuberculosis. The visit places Hans in a secluded community of patients, apart from the dramatic changes unfolding in the lowlands.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The plot largely follows that of the novel. Hans Castorp, a young son of a patrician family from Hamburg who wants to recover from recently completing his engineering degree, visits his cousin, who has tuberculosis, in an exclusive sanatorium in the Swiss mountain town of Davos in 1907. There, the young man becomes increasingly absorbed in the morbid world of the patient community and falls in love with Clawdia Chauchat, a Russian woman. He enjoys the sweet, decadent life of illness in isolation from the dramatic changes taking place in the lowlands, learns from the Freemason Ludovico Settembrini and the Jesuit Naphta, and increasingly loses his shape and composure. Thus, although he is not ill, he ultimately remains isolated in the mysterious place for seven years, until the outbreak of the Great War abruptly brings him and the entire community of the Magic Mountain back to reality.
