Full plot (contains spoilers)

Diabolik steals Armen’s priceless crown. A few months later, the remaining jewels in the collection are worn by the dancers of the Smeraldo Ballet for an exclusive performance, but Diabolik manages to steal those too by kidnapping the women. In reality, this is all part of Inspector Ginko’s plan: he has made the jewels radioactive by immersing them in a special varnish. Using a Geiger counter, the inspector manages to locate the King of Terror’s hideout. Caught off guard by their enemy, Diabolik and Eva Kant are forced to flee, leaving behind all the loot from their heists. During the escape, Eva is injured and Diabolik abandons her to her fate; the thief manages to get away by diving into a river. At the hideout, Ginko finds the plans that lead him to Diabolik’s operations base, where Diabolik organizes his heists and makes his famous masks. He therefore begins to devise a plan to catch the thief, neglecting the woman he loves, Duchess Altea di Vallenberg. The noblewoman has come to Clerville to attend a grand ball, where she will wear the celebrated Black Griffin Necklace. Ginko had promised to act as her bodyguard, taking the opportunity to spend time with her—the two cannot make their relationship public because of their difference in social status—but the inspector prefers to focus on capturing Diabolik. Diabolik makes an initial attempt to attack the operations center, but Ginko’s men thwart it. During the attack, the criminal knocks Agent Roller unconscious; before the police storm in, however, he manages to retrieve the machine used to make the masks. Unexpectedly, Ginko receives a phone call from Eva Kant, who wants revenge for being abandoned by her beloved and promises to reveal her plans for recovering the loot lost while it was being transported out of the hideout. The attempt to capture the woman also comes to nothing because of Roller’s actions: besides being knocked down, he takes Eva’s radioactive bracelet, making it impossible to track her. The agent is then demoted and assigned to catalog the loot in Diabolik’s hideout alongside junior agent Elena Vanel. Ginko decides to trust Eva Kant’s word, but still arranges a fake transport of the loot in case her information is a trap. To fool Diabolik, an empty armored vehicle will leave the hideout, while the loot will be placed in an unmarked van. Roller volunteers to carry out the real transport, eager to redeem himself after his two failures. Elena Vanel, who has fallen in love with him, hides in the van so she will not leave him alone on the mission. The transport gets underway, but Ginko and his men soon fall into a trap. Meanwhile, the van driven by Roller disappears without a trace. In fact, the agent was Diabolik, who had taken Roller’s place during the attack on the operations center; the criminal is also reunited with Eva. The whole affair was a plan the two had devised to escape Ginko and then recover the loot: they had only pretended to part ways during their escape, after which Diabolik had taken Roller’s place in the attack on the operations center. Eva had pretended to betray Diabolik, who, disguised as Roller, had helped her escape and get rid of the radioactive bracelet. This allowed Diabolik to anticipate Ginko’s trap. Meanwhile, Eva, disguised as a makeup artist, stole the Black Griffin Necklace from Altea. But the two are surprised by Elena Vanel, who wounds Diabolik with a gunshot. Eva distracts her, and once Diabolik has recovered, he manages to overpower Elena. The two escape unimpeded. Ginko realizes that his fight with Diabolik will never end and that he should have focused on protecting Altea. Hurt by what has happened, the duchess says goodbye to him before returning to Beglait, implying that she has forgiven him. Having pulled off their spectacular heist, Eva and Diabolik enjoy a vacation.
