Two idle friends from the Ruhr region botch a pool-attendant exam but still land coveted jobs on Sylt.
The story
Paul and Böller, two working-class friends from the Ruhr region, spend their days hanging around their local outdoor pool and idolizing its attendant, Kalle. They decide to take the exam to become pool attendants themselves. Despite a disastrous performance, they secure coveted jobs on the island of Sylt. Initially bored and unhappy with their new situation, they soon find reasons to warm to the island. Paul becomes interested in an animal-loving Greenpeace activist who is investigating the disappearance of seals alongside her French colleague, Jacques.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Paul and Böller are two stereotypical working-class louts from the Ruhr region who, in their mid-twenties, have nothing better to do than hang around all day at “their” outdoor swimming pool. The pool attendant, Kalle, is an absolute role model to them, so they promptly decide to take an exam to become pool attendants themselves. Despite giving a completely botched performance, they get the coveted jobs as pool attendants on the island of Sylt. At first they are thoroughly dissatisfied and bored, but they soon realize that Sylt isn’t so bad after all. Paul is very taken with an animal-loving Greenpeace activist (Dorkas Kiefer), who is looking into the disappearance of seals with her French colleague, Jacques. It later turns out that Jacques has been stealing the animals and offering them for consumption every evening at a gourmet restaurant. After Paul and Böller manage to spread their dreary ’90s style across the island through their acquaintance with the famous Austrian fashion designer Gigi Griesmayr, the whole excursion gets completely out of hand, and they lose their jobs as pool attendants on Sylt and return to their roots in Wanne-Eickel.
