A commitment-averse Munich graphic designer drifts between furnished sublets and romantic affairs, while his friends try to keep him from settling down.
The story
Munich graphic designer Lukas owns little beyond a few household items, his clothes, and a duck. A charming womanizer with no fixed address and no wish for commitment, he rarely stays long in one place, moving from furnished sublet to furnished sublet and pursuing amorous adventures with women from varied social backgrounds. Some of their relatives disapprove of his behavior. The story begins after his brief relationship with Ingrid ends, as Lukas’s male friends once again try to keep the handsome bachelor from drifting into marriage.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A few household items, his clothes, and a duck—that is about all the Munich graphic designer Lukas owns. He is a slick charmer and a hopeless womanizer, a free spirit with no fixed address and no desire for a committed relationship. Lukas can never stay in one place for long, so he moves from apartment to apartment, always subletting a furnished place. There, he prefers to devote himself entirely to his amorous adventures. The notoriously commitment-averse man is very popular with women. Thus, between the bed and the bathtub, his path crosses with women from all walks of life—from a petit-bourgeois woman to an upper-class lady and even a member of the high nobility. At times, relatives of one or another of the women he has “seduced” regard Lukas’s antics with considerable displeasure. Lukas’s dance around the eternal feminine begins when his brief relationship with Ingrid ends; and, as in the time that follows, his (male) friends once again have to do their part to stop the good-looking bachelor from “accidentally” sailing into the harbor of marriage. After many affairs, Lukas eventually meets a young woman who is quite clearly just as unattached and free-spirited as he is, and for the first time he begins to develop a genuine interest in a bedmate. But Daniela turns the tables and makes him wait.
