A young woman and four aging farm animals flee toward Bremen, each seeking a life beyond the fate others have chosen for them.
The story
On a small farm, Lissi loves Johann, the hired hand, but her father plans to marry her to a neighboring farmer for the sake of his fields. Her stepmother responds by arranging for Johann to be sent away to sea and locking Lissi in the attic. At the same time, she intends to turn the farm’s four elderly animals—a donkey, dog, cat, and rooster—into food. The animals set off for Bremen to become town musicians, while Lissi escapes and searches for Johann. Their journeys converge as Lissi encounters the animals on the road.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Farmer Georg, his second wife Martha, and his daughter Lissi live on a small farm. Their hired hand, Johann, who also lives on the farm, is in love with Lissi, but nobody else knows this. The farm is also home to a feeble old donkey, a blind dog, a tired cat, and a vain old rooster. One day, when Georg plans to marry Lissi off to the farmer Hans Sittler in order to get his fields, Lissi tells her father and stepmother that she loves Johann. In response, her stepmother plans to sell the hired hand to her cousin Adam in Bremen, who is going away to sea for at least a year. Since the four animals are so old, the stepmother wants to turn them into soup and sausages. While the stepmother locks Lissi in the attic and forces Johann to go to sea, the animals, knowing what fate awaits them, decide to walk to Bremen and become town musicians there. Lissi escapes to go looking for Johann. On his way to Bremen, Johann is captured by robbers, who force him to work for them. On her way to Bremen, Lissi meets the animals. She and the animals continue on together. They have no idea that they are being followed by the farmer and his wife, as well as by the knacker, who was supposed to turn the donkey into sausage. The knacker catches up with the fugitives and tries to abduct the donkey, but Lissi and the animals drive him away. On their way, Lissi and the animals come across the robbers’ house. The animals manage to scare the robbers away with their dreadful singing. Lissi also manages to free Johann, whom the robbers have tied up because he tried to escape. Meanwhile, the farmer and his wife are abducted by the same robbers and forced to keep watch over the robbers’ house. There, the animals mistake them for robbers and chase them away. While Lissi and Johann are able to marry using the robbers’ gold, Hans Sittler marries Suse, the rich farmer’s daughter. The animals start practicing their singing and delight the guests at the wedding, which takes place in Bremen, with a song that tells their story.
