Full plot (contains spoilers)
Anne, a petite and shy girl, arrives as a new student in a fifth-grade class where the overweight Tilla acts as both the leader and the strongest pupil. Tilla, who is growing up without her mother and is herself bullied at home by her two older brothers, immediately takes a dislike to the new student for no particular reason and proceeds to bully her. She beats Anne up, damages her bicycle, and turns the other pupils against her. While Tilla is supported in particular by her best friend Knutschi, Anne is helped only by her classmate Felix. Anne, who likes to paint, retreats into the dream world of her pictures and keeps her problems with Tilla from her parents. After Anne is pursued by Tilla, the two end up in a barn in a helpless predicament from which they cannot free themselves. In this situation, they begin to talk to each other, and their former mutual dislike eventually gives way to a respectful relationship.
