Four friends reunite in rural Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to help turn a wrecked former school into a bed-and-breakfast.
The story
Friends Caroline, Eva, Estelle, Judith, and Kiki gather to help Kiki move from Cologne to rural Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where she and her husband Max plan to open a bed-and-breakfast in an old school building. The building is in disastrous condition, and its planned opening is only three weeks away. When the friends arrive, Max leaves for Hamburg for a job, leaving them to tackle the mounting renovation chaos. A storm brings rain through the roof, and Eva’s fall deepens her fear that she is on a run of bad luck. Caroline, meanwhile, worries that she is being followed by a man staying in Kiki’s fishing hut, especially after receiving death threats connected to her last trial.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
This time, friends Caroline, Eva, Estelle, Judith, and Kiki are not meeting for their monthly dinner, but to help Kiki move. She is moving with her husband and little Greta far away from the bustle of Cologne, to the rural idyll of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The friends are left behind feeling wistful, but soon they receive an emergency call from Kiki, and the four of them set off to see her. Kiki and Max are turning a school building into a bed-and-breakfast, but it has turned out to be a complete wreck, putting their planned opening in three weeks in jeopardy. As soon as Kiki’s friends arrive, Max flees the mounting chaos for Hamburg, where he has taken on a job at short notice. On their very first evening together, there is an unpleasant surprise. During a thunderstorm, heavy rain pours through the roof of the old building, and Eva takes a fall. This only reinforces her growing belief that she is on a run of bad luck and may therefore die soon. Caroline also has problems, though: she feels she is being followed. Since her last trial, she has received death threats, and for the past few days she has quite clearly kept running into the same man, who has rented Kiki’s fishing hut of all places, supposedly to go on holiday. With all the construction work underway, Kiki’s financing is at risk of collapsing because a foundation managed by Estelle’s daughter-in-law is withholding its funds. But the women are determined to overcome every problem. They throw themselves into the work, and thanks to their charm, they manage to persuade some capable men to lend a hand. Caroline gradually convinces herself that the man from Cologne may actually just be on holiday and is a hobby ornithologist, which would explain his surveillance equipment. But her research suggests he has something to hide, so she searches the fishing hut and finds documents in his suitcase indicating that Thomas Steiner has his sights set on Estelle. Shortly afterward, when her friend falls off her bicycle and Steiner helps her, he reveals that he is a financial investigator hired by Estelle’s daughter-in-law to find out whether the foundation’s funds are being used for their intended purpose. Since he can confirm that they are being used for the project to save the old school building, he leaves again. But Estelle learns that her daughter-in-law has finally pushed her out of the foundation. With help from the whole village, they eventually manage to finish the hotel on time, and the four friends drive back to Cologne.
