Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ilsebill is the daughter of Senior Government Councillor Thoms. The daughter and her father are genuinely devoted to each other, but ever since Thoms married Gina, his second and considerably younger wife, he and Ilsebill have been constantly arguing. One day, a false suspicion leads Father Thoms to decide to send Ilsebill away to a girls’ boarding school. That is the last straw for Ilsebill. One day, she can no longer bear staying at home and decides to elope with her boyfriend, Hans. The two leave Germany and impulsively emigrate to the United States. To afford their passage, Ilsebill takes a job as a kitchen assistant and her boyfriend as a stoker. Once they arrive in the land of opportunity, the couple build up a small fortune through hard work. When they have “made it,” Ilsebill decides to return and see how her father is doing. In the meantime, he has been bitterly disappointed by his second wife, who has run off with a younger man, the composer Wladimir. At last, the moment has come for father and daughter to reconcile.
