Full plot (contains spoilers)
Over a bowl of Feuerzangenbowle, a group of gentlemen tell stories about their school days. The successful young writer Dr. Johannes Pfeiffer envies his friends the fun they had at school. He was denied such pleasures himself, having been educated by a private tutor. His friends then decide to disguise him as a schoolboy and have him attend a “proper” school for a few weeks.
