Günter Rätz

A girl fleeing a disappointing school report takes flight with her friends in a crystal-powered windmill and embarks on a space adventure.

The story

Ashamed of her poor school report, Olli runs away from home with her friends: Pinkus the dog and Alexander, a conceited horse. They take shelter from the rain in an old windmill, where a quirky professor is experimenting with a crystal-powered machine in the attic. The professor lives with Susi, a motherly crocodile. Olli impulsively throws a handful of crystals into the machine, giving it enough power to lift the windmill into space. The group, now unwilling cosmonauts, must learn to steer their unusual craft as they begin adventures among distant planets.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The girl Olli is ashamed of her poor school report and runs away from home. With her friends, the dog Pinkus and the conceited horse Alexander, she takes shelter from a rain shower in an old windmill. A quirky professor lives there, tinkering in the windmill’s attic with a machine powered by crystals. He lives with Susi, a motherly crocodile. When the impulsive Olli angrily throws a whole handful of crystals into the machine, it develops such tremendous power that the windmill lifts off and flies into space. The unwilling cosmonauts quickly learn to steer the windmill through space and have adventures on various planets. On a lifeless rocky planet, a volcanic mist confuses the travellers’ senses. On a tiny planet that keeps jolting suddenly, they discover strange mirror-egg plants. But when a seed from one of these plants is planted in a flowerpot, its extreme growth causes the windmill to crash. After making an emergency landing on a water planet, they meet small, friendly creatures there that resemble frogs. The travellers help them by blocking a dangerous volcanic vent with the alien climbing plant. After a successful return to Earth, Olli’s anger has faded. She decides to become a volcano engineer.
