After an earthquake, a village in Styria, Austria (Tragöß), invites traumatized children from Italy to stay and recover. The children are accompanied by their teacher, Rosaria, who lost her family as well as all her possessions in the natural disaster. There, she falls in love with the young farmer Josef and decides to stay in the close-knit little village community. But she often encounters rejection there. After a scuffle with his son, Josef’s father falls so badly that he sues Josef. Despite being innocent, Josef is sentenced to 14 months in prison. At his father’s birthday celebration, Josef appears unexpectedly and shows everyone gathered there his mother’s buried corpse. Back then, he had seen his father beat her and carry her away.
