Full plot (contains spoilers)

Gregor is a high school student at a boarding school in Bavaria and believes in love. He finds it with Billie, who dropped out of school when she became pregnant and is now struggling to get by while dealing with her ex-husband’s debts. Gregor’s friend Arthur believes in free love, though he has never been in love himself. Since Gregor would like to be better understood, he spends a long time trying to introduce the two to each other—but in vain, because something always gets in the way. When the moment finally comes, Gregor realizes that Arthur and Billie are connected on a higher level and are meant for each other, and he prevents them from meeting. Around that time, Arthur is shot dead. Gregor ends his relationship with Billie, who dies in a bicycle accident the following spring because she is following “an inner calling.”
