A NASA scientist presents aliens with a wildly skewed video history of humanity, prompting them to consider stopping humans from venturing into space.

The story

In 1977, NASA scientist Gerhard Friedle and his team launch the Golden Record into space aboard the Voyager probe, carrying humanity’s collected knowledge. Decades later, three aliens find the probe and view a video message in which Friedle recounts human history, from the Big Bang to the present. But this version of events differs sharply from the history books. Astonished by what they interpret as humanity’s idiotic behavior, the aliens consider preventing people from ever leaving Earth, hoping to spare the wider universe from human chaos and suffering.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1977, NASA scientist Gerhard Friedle and his team send the Golden Record into space aboard the Voyager probe. It contains the collected knowledge of humanity. In 2050, aliens discover the probe and its record. Friedle then presents the three aliens with an episodic retelling of human history, from the Big Bang to the present, in the form of a video message stored on the record. However, events in this version unfolded quite differently from how they appear in the history books. Astonished by what they see as humanity’s obviously idiotic behavior, the aliens decide to prevent humans from ever leaving Earth, “to spare the rest of the universe the chaos and suffering.” Only at the end do we learn that the Golden Record received by the aliens was actually intended as a gag for NASA’s Christmas party, and that Friedle’s dim-witted assistant accidentally sent the wrong record. Earth is destroyed while an aging Greta Thunberg gives a speech claiming that the climate has been saved.
