Two pilots venture into the Brazilian jungle to find their missing friend, only to encounter a treasure hunt and a woman revered as a goddess.
The story
Jim and Tom, fellow pilots employed by an international oil company, fly into the Brazilian jungle in search of Harry, another pilot who has disappeared. Harry’s last known sign of life came from the Rio Beni, where he may have made an emergency landing. A mysterious map copied from a sixteenth-century Spanish document points toward a temple and a golden goddess statue. In the Amazon region, Jim and Tom face riverboat captain Jeff and his treasure-seeking villains, as well as the hazards of the jungle. They also encounter Aloa, a blonde woman revered locally as the “white goddess,” whose background is far less supernatural than her reputation suggests.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In search of Harry, a missing fellow pilot, the friends Jim and Tom—both pilots for an internationally operating oil company—set out on a rescue mission full of adventures that takes them into the Brazilian jungle. Harry’s last sign of life came from the Rio Beni, where Jim and Tom head in their seaplane. He presumably had to make an emergency landing there. A mysterious map, a copy of a sixteenth-century Spanish document, points to a temple and a golden statue of a goddess. In the Amazon region, the two Europeans have to fight off villains led by the riverboat captain Jeff, who are searching for the treasure, and fend off throwing spears, blowpipes, deadly traps, and poisonous arrows and snakes. A danger of a very different kind awaits Jim when a platinum-blonde siren named Aloa, worshipped as the “white goddess” (though she is merely the daughter of a German doctor, raised in the jungle), flirts passionately with him. One day, the whole party, joined by some local people and the down-at-heel adventurer Bernard, falls into an ambush: headhunters capture Aloa, and a shrunken head dangling in front of her foreshadows her fate. The men try to free her. Meanwhile, Harry is also found.
