The story
Swiss couple Alice and Peter Waldvogel have been married for 42 years. After Peter turns 65 and retires, his desire to sleep in contrasts sharply with Alice’s zest for action. The mismatch persists even during a Mediterranean cruise aboard the Costa Smeralda, where they barely grow any closer.

The Swiss couple Alice and Peter Waldvogel, married for 42 years, discover after the man’s 65th birthday and his retirement that his need to “sleep in” stands in stark contrast to his wife’s zest for action. When they barely grow any closer even during a Mediterranean cruise aboard the Costa Smeralda, Alice impulsively decides not to return to the ship after a shore excursion in Marseille. After discovering that her best friend Magali, who died completely unexpectedly while hiking, had a long-standing affair in France, Alice too begins to reflect on her own needs. This comedy of emancipation first depicts their relationship thrown off balance in quietly dramatic tones, then goes on to describe the breakaway with restraint. (Alice: “I’m 65, not 90!”)
