A widowed furniture restorer returns to Wales with her son, hoping to sell her inherited home and start an antique-furniture business in London.
The story
After her husband dies in an accident, furniture restorer Alex Stapleton returns from South Africa to Wales with her 13-year-old son, David. Short of money, she plans to sell the estate she inherited from her grandparents and use the proceeds to take over a small antique-furniture shop in London. But the remote, dilapidated, old-fashioned house proves difficult to sell, despite her efforts to improve it. Two men court Alex: Michael Lloyd Glynn, the town’s mayor and a roofing-business owner whose proposed nature park would border her property, and her childhood friend James Belbroughton, now a wealthy landowner.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After her husband dies in an accident, furniture restorer Alex Stapleton returns from South Africa to Wales, where she grew up and where her aunt Margret still lives, with her 13-year-old son David. Now out of money, Alex wants to sell the estate she inherited from her grandparents and use the proceeds to take over a small antique furniture shop in London. Selling it proves difficult, however, because the house is remote, dilapidated, and old-fashioned, even though Alex has worked hard to fix it up in the short time she has had. Two men immediately take notice of Alex and court her: Michael Lloyd Glynn, who owns a roofing business and is the town’s mayor, is running for the Welsh Parliament, and his cherished project is a new nature park that would border Alex’s property; the other is Alex’s childhood friend James Belbroughton, now a wealthy landowner, whose son Henry quickly becomes friends with David. Michael keeps running into her by chance in difficult situations and soon falls in love with her. But when Alex learns at a party at James’s estate that Michael is engaged to television presenter Sarah Gladestry, she feels used by him and gives him the cold shoulder. Then the shady Sam Morgan turns up, suspecting there are gold deposits beneath Alex’s property. Alex’s grandfather had already dug a mine shaft, but found nothing. Sam has secretly had soil samples from there analyzed and is certain there is enough gold to make them set for life. He urges Alex to work with him, especially as he also seems personally interested in her. Michael interrupts their conversation. He had intended to tell Alex that he and Sarah had mutually agreed to call off their engagement. He is horrified by the gold-mining plans, which would devastate the entire landscape, and has a fierce argument with Sam. Sam’s hot-tempered nature once again puts Alex off, and she throws both men out. The owner of the London shop Alex wanted to buy offers her a job there. Meanwhile, Sam tries once more to persuade her to go ahead with the gold mine, and turns violent as he sees his last chance slipping away. Michael arrives, alerted by David, whom Alex had just managed to call. He drives Sam away and tells Alex that he is in love with her and is free again. He would like to restore the old house with her. The film ends with their passionate kiss.
