Josepha’s love for a mountain guide is tested by her condition that he give up his dangerous profession before they marry.

The story

At the Three Moors inn in Scherding, innkeeper’s daughter Josepha loves the poor mountain guide Hans Immerhofer. She agrees to marry him only if he gives up his dangerous profession, and he promises to do so. But Hans climbs Geisterspitze once more to pick an edelweiss for her as a token of love. The gesture leads to a major quarrel just after their wedding, and Josepha angrily throws him out.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Josepha is the innkeeper’s daughter at the “Three Moors” inn, situated in idyllic Scherding. She loves the poor mountain guide Hans Immerhofer, but will marry him only if he gives up his dangerous profession. For her sake, he promises to do so, but then climbs Geisterspitze once more to pick an edelweiss for his beloved and present it as a token of his love. This leads to a huge argument right after the wedding. In a fit of helpless anger, Josepha promptly throws him out, and Hans really does leave, remaining away for many years. Ten years pass, and the innkeeper’s daughter has become a wealthy innkeeper herself. During this time a number of suitors have hovered around her, but Josepha has always remained faithful to her Hans. One day, however, she gives up and agrees to accept the advances of whichever suitor brings her an edelweiss from the mountain. A bearded stranger is among the suitors, and the following day he does indeed call on her with a small bouquet of edelweiss: it is Hans, finally returned home.
