Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the early postwar years, in the rural Bavarian border region on Lake Constance, Christa von Söldern has run the family estate since her father’s death, turning it into an efficient yet homely hotel, which she manages herself. One day, Dr. Stefan Heim, a physician, returns from captivity in the war to the lakeside home of his elderly parents. Christa helps Stefan set up a medical practice locally, and the two soon fall in love. Their relationship soon produces a son, Peter. For many years, the marriage between the mistress of Sölderhof and the successful doctor, who is devoted to his work, goes well. But then clouds gather over their happiness: Stefan’s demanding, time-consuming profession, to which he devotes himself completely, threatens to place a heavy strain on their love. They eventually separate, but after various further events, it is little Peter who brings his parents back together.
