Full plot (contains spoilers)
Edgar enjoys a successful career as a stand-up comedian, but away from the stage he struggles with loneliness and the dreariness of everyday life. Things change when, during a show, he unexpectedly spots his ex-wife Eva in the audience after 25 years. After the performance, she talks to him and tells him that she has incurable pancreatic cancer and does not want treatment. The news shocks Edgar, who impulsively tries to change her mind and give her hope of medical alternatives, but she firmly refuses. The circumstances bring the former couple closer again after all those years apart. Eva, who raised their children alone and wants them to have a relationship with Edgar, arranges meetings with their daughter Melli and son Patrick. While Melli, an aspiring comedian, is open to getting to know her father so late in life, Patrick is initially unable to forgive him and throws him out of the house when they meet again. An evening together, an outing to Hamburg, and a trip to Sylt intensify the emotional tensions, as Edgar continues to question Eva’s decision. Things come to a head when Edgar, drunk, talks about Eva on a live broadcast. At the same time, Eva’s health rapidly deteriorates. After she is admitted to hospital, Edgar uses a performance to speak openly for the first time about his family and what Eva means to him, and the audience responds positively. In the hours that follow, Eva retreats to her home, where Edgar and Melli care for her. Edgar apologizes to Eva for his past mistakes, and the two find peace with each other in their final moments together. Edgar spends the night by her side, listening to her favorite music, until Eva dies.
