After a robbery ends in a fatal hostage-taking, a prosecutor’s case against three suspects collapses, leaving a shaken officer confronting the limits of the justice system.
The story
A robbery turns into a shootout with police, and a young woman taken hostage is murdered. An intensive manhunt identifies and arrests three members of the “PitBulls,” whom prosecutor Judith Schrader considers clearly guilty. Defense attorney Andrea Marquardt persuades the court that the evidence is insufficient to convict them. Plainclothes officer Michael Pollmann, who tried to stop the robbery and feels partly responsible for the young woman’s death, is as shocked by the acquittal as Schrader. With colleague Patrick Odonkor, he keeps the club members under surveillance, while his long-standing frustration with the rule of law deepens.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
During a robbery, a shootout breaks out with the police. A young woman is taken hostage and then murdered. After an intensive manhunt, with help from the public, the three perpetrators are identified and arrested soon afterward. Emre Topal, Marco Kretschmer, and Dragan Boskov are members of the “PitBulls” organization. The case is clear to prosecutor Judith Schrader, and she considers the men unquestionably guilty. However, defense attorney Andrea Marquardt manages to convince the court that the evidence is insufficient to convict the trio. Plainclothes officer Michael Pollmann, who had also tried to stop the robbery, blames himself in part for the girl’s death and is as shocked by the acquittal as the prosecutor. Together with his colleague Patrick Odonkor, he keeps the members of the “PitBull” club under constant surveillance. He has long been frustrated with the rule of law and increasingly doubts that his work can succeed. Shortly afterward, one of the suspected murderers is found dead, shot inside the club building. The prosecution sees several signs that the killing is connected to the power struggles currently taking place within a rival biker gang, but Schrader does not rule out vigilante justice either. The investigators do everything they can to solve the murder, hoping this will also help them find new evidence against Dragan Boskov and establish his guilt. According to inside information, an arms deal is due to take place soon. Schrader hopes this will enable her to bring Boskov down, but the investigators are lured to the wrong location and fail to stop the weapons handover. Meanwhile, Michael Pollmann has disappeared. Much suggests that he is taking the law into his own hands to deliver justice. A missing assault rifle and the diagnosis of Pollmann’s terminal illness fuel this suspicion. He has now taken Boskov captive and tells Schrader that Boskov “wants” to make a statement. She finds Boskov tied up in his apartment and tells Pollmann that the police have persuaded Marco Kretschmer to give a statement and identify Boskov as the girl’s murderer. Kretschmer will also soon show Montag, a colleague at the state criminal police, where the murder weapon is hidden, which would provide the final proof of Boskov’s guilt. It turns out that one of Montag’s colleagues leaked inside information to Boskov. Montag manages to prevent this police officer from shooting Kretschmer. Montag tells Pollmann to give up and hand Boskov over to the officers outside the house. Pollmann does so, but then provokes a suicide by cop by leaving Boskov’s house with his weapon drawn.
