A young witch tries to earn a place at the witches’ Walpurgis Night gathering by spending a year doing good deeds.

The story

The little witch lives in a crooked forest house with her talking raven, Abraxas, and longs to join the older witches at their Walpurgis Night celebration on the Blocksberg. After she sneaks into their gathering and dances without permission, her aunt Muhme Rumpumpel catches her and her broom is burned. The little witch is told she may attend the next celebration if she proves herself a good witch during the coming year. She sets out to do good deeds, including helping three elderly women find firewood. Meanwhile, she meets two lost innkeeper’s children, Vroni and Thomas, and welcomes them into her home.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The little witch lives with her talking raven, Abraxas, in a small, crooked house in the forest. Her greatest wish is to fly to the Blocksberg with the older witches and celebrate with them. When she tries to join the other witches and dance with them without permission on Walpurgis Night, her aunt, Muhme Rumpumpel, catches her. As punishment, her broom is burned, so it takes her “three days and three nights” to get home, and she buys a new broom from Mr. Pfefferkorn in town. She is also told that she may take part in the next Walpurgis Night if she manages to be a good witch in the meantime. So the little witch spends a year trying to perform enough good deeds. For example, she helps three old women who are looking for firewood in the forest but cannot find any on the ground, by conjuring up a storm that shakes many branches and pieces of bark from the trees. Along the way, she also meets two innkeeper’s children, Vroni and Thomas, who turn up at her front door because they have lost their way. She invites them in and shows them some magic tricks. Since this happens on a Friday, when witches are not supposed to do magic, Muhme Rumpumpel suddenly appears out of nowhere after Vroni and Thomas have left. At first she suspects the little witch of practicing magic, but eventually becomes convinced that she did not. When the little witch reports back to the witches’ council a year later, however, it turns out that, in the council’s view, a witch is supposed to be good at being evil, not at helping other people. So, as punishment, she is ordered to gather the wood for the Walpurgis Night bonfire. She decides to keep doing good deeds and, instead of turning the children into stones as she was ordered to, gives them a protective spell. Instead, she takes revenge by “witching the witchcraft out of” the older witches, turning them all into toads and conjuring their spellbooks and brooms to her. She then uses these as the bonfire for her own Walpurgis Night, which she happily celebrates with Abraxas.
