Die kleine Meerjungfrau (2013)

The mermaid Undine lives on the ocean floor with her sisters, Aquarella and Melusine, and their father, the Sea King. But Undine wants more than just combing her golden hair, because she is fascinated by life above the water. One day, she saves Prince Nikolas’s life after he nearly drowns while swimming, and falls in love with him. However, Prince Nikolas is unconscious and is soon found by the princess he is supposed to marry. They fall in love at once, but the princess disappears when she sees people approaching. Undine witnesses this and seeks out the powerful sea witch Mydra in a dark grotto. Undine asks Mydra to exchange her fish tail for legs. But Mydra sets a condition: Once on land, Undine will be mute, and if the prince does not choose her, she will become foam on the waves of the sea. Moreover, every step she takes will be painful. Undine agrees. The next morning, Nikolas and his two friends discover her on a rock. He invites Undine to his castle, where preparations are in full swing for Prince Nikolas’s wedding to the unknown Princess Anneline. This leaves Undine only a few days to win the prince’s heart, but he comes to cherish and love her as a sister. They fence and ride horses together, but he keeps thinking about the unknown beauty. On the day of the wedding, Nikolas and Undine dance together, but when Princess Anneline appears and he joyfully recognizes her as the beautiful stranger, the two of them marry. Undine sits sadly by the sea that night, when her sisters appear. They give her a dagger they received from Mydra in exchange for their hair. If Undine kills Nikolas with it, she will become a mermaid again. Undine enters the newlyweds’ bedroom, but she cannot bring herself to kill Nikolas. Determined, she throws the dagger into the sea. Mydra appears and tells Undine that she has passed the test. Undine receives a soul and is now allowed to explore the world.
