Full plot (contains spoilers)
At a joint reading, where the ageing movie star Nino Winter (82) presents his autobiography, titled I Came, I Saw and I Loved, Winter and the young aspiring writer Ada Hänselmann (32) get briefly acquainted. Ada is annoyed by Winter’s antics and immediately throws his book away. Because of an air traffic controllers’ strike, Winter’s return flight to Italy has been cancelled. Ada was supposed to be picked up by her boyfriend, but he has just broken up with her over the phone. So the two of them have to spend the night in a luxury hotel in Dortmund, and now find themselves sitting opposite each other at the hotel bar. The impulsive Ada proposes a game to the reserved Winter: he is to play a detective and follow her. As they walk through the city, they spot a man who, in their imagination, becomes a contract killer, and they follow him. Back at the hotel, Ada suggests that each of them may ask the other five questions, which must be answered honestly. This turns into hundreds of questions, and a magical closeness develops between them. The next morning, they say goodbye, and discover what secret the dubious man from their imagination actually has.
