Full plot (contains spoilers)
Robert and Wolf Rott, one a farmer and the other a sailor, are two brothers who have both fallen in love with the same woman, Teresa Donath. Wolf, a sailor, wins Teresa’s affection, but soon has to set off by ship for northern waters. There disaster strikes: Wolf is shipwrecked and is first reported missing, then presumed lost at sea and dead. Teresa is inconsolable, but decides to put her life and future back in order by marrying the remaining brother, farmer Robert. Then the inevitable happens: Wolf has survived, and one day he appears at Teresa’s door. This is the beginning of a catastrophe, because Teresa must now choose between the two Rott brothers. More disasters follow; for example, Wolf and Robert’s father and a shady lawyer named John Meyer die. Eventually Teresa is even hauled into court, but she leaves the courtroom acquitted. Faced with the question of which of the two Rott brothers she will remain faithful to, she chooses her husband Robert, whom she has come to appreciate and love over time.
