The story
After her father dies, heiress Hetty Raymond takes charge of a large mining company and finds its responsibilities overwhelming. She decides to seek a husband and courts Hans van Gent successfully. On their wedding day, a jealous cousin gives Hetty a letter in which Hans speaks disparagingly of their marriage. Despite this revelation, Hetty goes ahead with the wedding. The new couple then live more alongside one another than together, while the demands of the company and the unsettled state of their relationship shape their early married life.

After her father’s death, heiress Hetty Raymond runs a large mining company. Overwhelmed by the responsibility, she seeks a husband and successfully courts Hans van Gent. On their wedding day, a jealous cousin slips her a letter from Gent in which he speaks disparagingly of the marriage. She marries him anyway, but from then on they live more alongside each other than together. During a company crisis, however, her husband proves that he really can run the business. She comes to respect him, and her respect gradually grows, as does her love for him.
