As Christmas nears, prank-loving Hubert is blamed for mischief he didn’t commit—then meets Lila, a purple-clad angel only he can see.
The story
Hubert is a mischievous prankster who delights in playing tricks on people around him. Shortly before Christmas Eve, new pranks appear in his neighborhood and he is wrongly blamed. He then meets Lila, who is dressed entirely in purple and claims to be an angel visible only to him. She proves her claim. Lila says her father sent her to make someone angry, since a person who only does good could become conceited. She can return home only after a successful prank, but as Christmas approaches, her targets prove unusually forgiving and refuse to get angry.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The mischievous Hubert loves playing pranks on those around him, such as smearing the undersides of door handles. Shortly before Christmas Eve, however, pranks begin occurring in his neighborhood for which he is wrongly blamed. After a while, he meets Lila, who is dressed entirely in purple and claims to be an angel visible only to Hubert. She soon proves it, while Hubert repeatedly finds himself at a loss to explain things to those around him. By her own account, the angel was sent by her father to make someone angry—for anyone who does nothing but good all the time might become conceited. Lila can go home only after successfully pulling off a prank. Her pranks repeatedly fail because, with Christmas approaching, their victims are unusually forgiving and simply do not get angry, so Hubert now lends Lila a hand. Lila grows worried that she will not be allowed to return home in time for Christmas, while Hubert becomes increasingly concerned about her well-being. At last, the final attempt succeeds when the angel destroys the radio of one of Hubert’s neighbors, who is obviously hard of hearing, by pouring liquid into it. The obligatory prank has thus succeeded, but Lila is unhappy that her victim is now sad because the radio music has fallen silent. So she uses the special wish her father grants her as a reward to conjure a brass band into the man’s living room. As soon as her mission is complete, she suddenly vanishes from Hubert’s sight.
