A hotel owner bans male guests, prompting her granddaughters to challenge the rule and seek romance.
The story
Sepp, a handyman at the Dreistern country inn in Seebrugg, helps guests sneak in for romantic meetings. After two guests mistakenly end up in the bedrooms of owner Hermine Lechner and her daughter Veronika, Hermine decides that the inn will accept only women. Her three marriageable granddaughters—Hannelore, Gertraud, and Marianne—object to the rule, which is enforced with a sign at the entrance. The ban also unsettles the town, including Mayor Schwammerl. As the family adjusts to the new policy, the young women begin looking for ways around it, setting up a conflict between Hermine’s resolve and their hopes for romance.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sepp, the handyman at the Dreistern country inn in Seebrugg, Tyrol, is a bit of a scoundrel: he helps guests who are eager for a romantic tryst sneak in through the windows, holding the ladder for them. One evening, two of the guests end up in the bedrooms of the elderly Dreistern owner, Hermine Lechner, and her daughter Veronika. To prevent such mishaps once and for all, the older Mrs. Lechner decides the next morning that from now on she will accept only female guests. Veronika’s three marriageable daughters, Hannelore, Gertraud, and Marianne, are anything but pleased. “My decision is final. Men are forbidden!” decrees the resolute hotel owner. Naturally, the three young Lechner granddaughters are not prepared to accept this without a fight, even though the older Mrs. Lechner immediately has a large, gold-colored sign reading “Female Hotel Guests Only” put up at the hotel entrance. Before long, there is discord not only in the Lechner family’s household of five women, but in the town as well; Mayor Schwammerl reacts to the anti-men decision with bewilderment and even anger. Little by little, the granddaughters Hannelore, Gertraud, and Marianne try to get around the ban on men. Two of them eventually give up and leave the Dreistern, while the brunette Marianne stays and tries to change Grandma’s mind. Soon, a cheerful round of romantic pairings begins, accompanied by numerous musical numbers: their mother Veronika is matched with the head of the rival Seerose Hotel, while Hannelore lands the pop singer Charly Rassel, Gertraud falls for veterinarian Dr. Schermann, and Marianne gets together with music publisher Karl-Heinz Busch. At last, even Hofrätin Hermine is won over in time for the happy ending, and everything turns out well.
