Two well-integrated Viennese friends pose as unemployed petty criminals for a documentary crew, hoping to gain money, fame, and new opportunities.

The story

Benny and Marko are two Viennese friends with immigrant backgrounds who are well integrated and have little connection to their parents’ culture. Benny is frustrated that his Egyptian roots remain visible and that, as an actor, he is consistently cast as a foreigner. When a television crew arrives hoping to make a documentary series about the troubled neighborhood of Rudolfsgrund, its documentarian, Marlene Weizenhuber, wants to attract a large audience. Benny and Marko see a chance to make money, become famous, and gain new opportunities, so they present themselves as unemployed petty criminals and play into familiar clichés for the cameras.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film is set in the fictional Viennese neighborhood of Rudolfsgrund and is about two friends, Benny and Marko, who are basically perfectly integrated. The two Viennese men with immigrant backgrounds live like bobos and have little connection left to their parents’ culture and heritage. Benny, however, is troubled by the fact that his Egyptian roots are visible, and that as an actor he is always cast only as a foreigner. One day, a television crew approaches them, hoping to make a documentary series about Rudolfsgrund, a troubled neighborhood. The sensationalist TV documentarian Marlene Weizenhuber mainly wants to attract as large an audience as possible. So, in the hope of making money, becoming well-known, and getting new opportunities, Benny and Marko pretend to be unemployed petty criminals and throw themselves into a host of clichés. One day, while reviewing the footage, Marlene Weizenhuber happens to discover that Benny and Marko have staged the whole thing for her. She nevertheless keeps playing along. Benny and Marko increasingly conclude that it is time to get out, partly because they are setting a bad example for the young people. At a meeting, the two present the neighborhood’s residents with a plan they have drawn up together. Afterward, with the help of several others, they break into the broadcasting center and put their own footage on the air. In this segment, they tell viewers their true story and explain the real problems in the neighborhood.
