A Vienna history professor’s new research partnership leads her to investigate a family connection rooted in Austria’s postwar Soviet occupation.

The story

Adelgunde Kramer, an emeritus professor of contemporary history at the University of Vienna, hopes to establish an Institute for European Social History. When Russian historian Jekaterina Torgaschowa arrives to research reparations in the former Soviet Zone for her dissertation, Adelgunde becomes her supervisor. Jekaterina also has a personal reason for seeking her out: she claims to be the granddaughter of Adelgunde’s father, Franz, who was deported to Siberia after being accused of sabotage while working in Lower Austria’s oil fields during the Soviet occupation. The two women begin investigating Franz’s fate and the family history surrounding his deportation.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Adelgunde Kramer is an emeritus professor of contemporary history at the University of Vienna who lives entirely for her work. She wants to found an Institute for European Social History. Russian historian Jekaterina Alexejewna Torgaschowa comes to Vienna to research reparations in the Soviet Zone for her dissertation. Adelgunde is to supervise her. However, Jekaterina also has a personal reason for getting in touch with Adelgunde. Adelgunde’s father, Franz Kramer, worked in the oil fields of Lower Austria during the Soviet occupation of postwar Austria after the Second World War. After being accused of sabotage, he was deported to Siberia. Adelgunde’s family, including her mother Irmgard and her younger sister Heidrun Winkler, née Kramer, did not learn of his death until several years later. Jekaterina claims to be Adelgunde’s father’s granddaughter. He is said to have started a new family in the camp. Adelgunde and Jekaterina begin investigating. After their inquiries also turn to the past of Reiter senior, the former head of the farmers’ association, his son, Chief of Staff Reiter junior, arranges for Adelgunde not to get her institute after all. A DNA test shows that Adelgunde really is Jekaterina’s aunt, but that Heidrun is Jekaterina’s half-sister—Heidrun and Adelgunde do not have the same father. Their mother, Irmgard, confesses to them that Karl Reiter senior is Heidrun’s father, which makes Heidrun Winkler and Chief of Staff Reiter junior half-siblings. In 1953, a fire broke out after a fight at the oil field. At the time, Reiter senior had confirmed to the Russians the false accusations of sabotage against Franz Kramer, and Kramer was unjustly sent to the camp because of Karl Reiter. After they confront Reiter senior and junior about Reiter senior’s denunciation back then, Jekaterina suspects that Adelgunde will now get her institute after all.
