Die Regentrude (1976)

In an extremely hot summer, the earth dries up. The heat torments people and animals alike, and even the field spring runs dry. The Fireman rejoices at the easily ignited land, while the Rain Maiden, who brings the rain, seems to be asleep. The Meadow Farmer and the Moor Farmer also take pleasure in the drought, which produces hay and fills their coffers. The sinister Moor Farmer wants to marry the Meadow Farmer’s daughter, Maren, but she loves poor Andrees. Although the Meadow Farmer does not believe in the Rain Maiden, he promises Andrees his daughter’s hand if he can bring rain within 48 hours. Only a particular saying can awaken the Rain Maiden; it is eventually reconstructed with the help of the shepherd and Andrees’ mother, Stine. Andrees and Maren set out together for the Rain Maiden, outwit the Fireman and the Moor Farmer, who try to stop them, and finally reach the Rain Maiden’s realm, where they wake her with the saying. A short time later, rain begins to fall, and the field spring is flowing again. The people and livestock are saved, and Andrees is allowed to marry Maren.
