The story

In the mid-19th century, Hannah Brettschneider, a pregnant innkeeper’s daughter, leaves her home in Munich for Gönningen, a small town in Württemberg, hoping to meet her great love, Helmut Kerner. There, she discovers that Helmut belongs to a respected upper-class family whose flower-seed business has prospered around the world. More troublingly, Helmut has already been promised in marriage to Seraphine. Though Hannah’s prospects seem hopeless, she decides to confront him: she is expecting his child and wants him to face the truth. Her arrival sets personal loyalties and family expectations on a collision course.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Hannah Brettschneider lives in the mid-19th century. She is an innkeeper’s daughter who leaves her home in Munich while pregnant to travel to Gönningen, a small town in Württemberg, to meet her great love, Helmut Kerner. When she arrives, she learns that Helmut belongs to an upper-class, highly respected family that has built a successful worldwide business trading flower seeds. She had not expected this. But that is not the whole truth: she hears that Helmut has already been promised in marriage to the attractive Seraphine. So Hannah’s prospects seem hopeless. Nevertheless, she decides to look Helmut in the eye, since she is expecting his child, after all. Hannah’s persistence is rewarded: against his mother’s wishes, Helmut decides not to marry Seraphine after all. When Seraphine gets wind of the broken engagement, she marries Helmut’s younger brother, but with the ulterior motive of staying close to Helmut. Although this situation is bound to cause resentment and strife, Helmut and Hannah let nothing stop them from becoming husband and wife.
