A treasure map offers an innkeeper’s son a way out of his dreary life—and draws him into an expedition to find Captain Flint’s hidden fortune.

The story

Jim Hawkins, the son of an innkeeper near Bristol, comes into possession of a treasure map after sailor Bones dies. It marks the island and hiding place of Captain Flint’s fortune, and Jim sees it as a chance to escape his dreary life. With no ship or means of his own, he offers half the map to Dr. Livesey and the adventure-loving magistrate Trelawney. They agree to seek the treasure and sail aboard the Hispaniola with, among others, the one-legged cook Long John Silver and members of Flint’s old crew. Rivalries are already developing among the men on board.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jim Hawkins grows up as the innkeeper’s son at an inn near Bristol, which he has to run with his mother alone. After the death of a guest, the sailor Bones, the boy comes into possession of a treasure map. It shows an island and the hiding place of Captain Flint’s treasure. Long disgusted with his wretched life, Jim now seeks adventure in the wider world. But he has neither a ship nor any means. So he symbolically offers half the map to the doctor Livesey and the magistrate Trelawney, who is known for his love of adventure. Together, they decide to search for the treasure. Among others, they are accompanied on the voyage by the one-legged cook Long John Silver and part of Captain Flint’s old crew. There are already numerous rivalries among the men aboard the Hispaniola. Also aboard is 17-year-old Sheila, disguised as a cabin boy. She is Captain Flint’s daughter, though no one knows it. She herself only suspects this because of a birthmark on her right shoulder and a ring cut in half, whose other half belongs to her father. When she almost falls overboard in a storm and Jim rushes to save her, he discovers that she is a girl. Bound by this secret, they grow closer, but only in a kind of love-hate relationship. Meanwhile, Long John Silver manages to get hold of the treasure map and incite a mutiny. The ship’s crew is held captive by Israel Hands, while the main group of pirates reaches the island with Sheila and Jim. On the way to the legendary Treasure Island, Jim manages to snatch the map back and escape. In his relentless pursuit of the treasure, Long John Silver tries to eliminate his rivals. Jim is captured by an islander named Ben Gunn, but manages to free himself and make his way to the group led by Captain Smollett, Livesey, and Trelawney. In order to get the treasure map back, Long John Silver even goes to the opponents’ camp to negotiate. But he has to leave empty-handed, and his anger grows. Although the pirates have no firearms, they attack the Englishmen. They fail, but amid the general confusion Sheila’s true identity is revealed. She is taken back to the ship, and Jim secretly follows them to protect her. He manages to take out both guards, O’Brian and his greatest adversary, Israel Hands, but Sheila feels more closely connected to the pirates and in turn takes Jim Hawkins prisoner so she can trade him to the Englishmen for the treasure map. Back on the island, the two sneak into the Englishmen’s camp, but the pirates are there now, by this time bitterly fighting among themselves, while the Englishmen have retaken the Hispaniola. After a long journey through the island wilderness, they finally find the treasure chest, but it is empty. The mysterious islander Ben Gunn strikes again and kidnaps Sheila, having found out that she is the daughter of his hated enemy, Flint. But Jim and Dr. Livesey, who turns up unexpectedly, drive him off and continue searching for the treasure, suspecting that the islander has hidden it. Long John Silver joins them again, so the four of them continue searching and finally succeed. But despite all their efforts, the treasure sinks irrevocably into the marsh, and Dr. Livesey sinks with it. They leave the pirate Black Dog and one of his companions behind with the mad islander. At sea, Sheila frees the captive Silver and escapes with him in one of the Hispaniola’s boats.
