The story

In late-19th-century Germany, Mrs. Hergentheim, a tax inspector’s widow, lives with her three daughters, Rosi, Else, and Laura. The young women support themselves by working at the Winkelmann family’s fan factory, where they draw butterfly patterns. Concerned that her daughters should no longer face financial worries, their mother is determined that they marry well. She particularly hopes that her eldest daughter, Else, who has already been divorced, will become engaged to Max, the factory owner’s son. Else, however, is attracted to Richard Kessler, a traveling salesman.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Germany in the late 19th century. Mrs. Hergentheim, the widow of a tax inspector, lives under one roof with her three daughters, some of whom are already adults: Rosi, Else, and Laura. The young women earn their living as employees at the Winkelmann family’s fan factory, drawing butterfly patterns for its products. Mrs. Hergentheim is determined to see her daughters “well married” so they no longer have to worry about money. Else Hergentheim is the eldest and has already been divorced once. Mrs. Hergentheim wants nothing more than for Else to get engaged to Max, the factory owner’s son. But Else is attracted to Richard Kessler, a sharp, nonchalant traveling salesman and man of the world. Her younger sister Rosi, who is quite trusting—naive, one might say—acts as a messenger of love between the two lovebirds. A secret meeting between Else and Kessler makes Max Winkelmann, Mrs. Hergentheim’s prospective son-in-law, grow suspicious. Rosi once again steps in for Else, claiming that she had actually been due to meet Kessler herself. Now the entire family dynamic in the Hergentheim household begins to unravel…
