The story

Dr. Benjamin Brinkmann is preparing to marry his longtime girlfriend, Dr. Sophie Schwarz, and their family, friends, and colleagues gather in the Black Forest. Benjamin works at the Black Forest Clinic, as his father and half-brother did before him, and the reunion brings former colleagues together, including the retired head nurse Hildegard. During the wedding preparations, a traffic accident occurs on a country road. The driver responsible is Sophie’s ex-boyfriend, forester Martin Stadler, who was intoxicated. Although the injured people are rescued, Martin is overwhelmed by remorse and faces a serious spinal cord injury.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Dr. Benjamin Brinkmann is now ready to marry his longtime girlfriend, Dr. Sophie Schwarz. For the occasion, the couple’s family, friends, and colleagues gather in the Black Forest. Since Benjamin, like his father and half-brother Udo before him, works as a doctor at the Black Forest Clinic, most of his father’s former colleagues are brought together there. With some effort, the housekeeper Carsta Michaelis even manages to track down Hildegard, the once-firm and now-retired head nurse, and persuade her to attend the stag party and the wedding. In the midst of the wedding preparations, a traffic accident occurs on a country road. It was caused by Sophie’s ex-boyfriend while intoxicated. All the injured people are rescued. But the driver responsible, forester Martin Stadler, is plagued by remorse after the accident and has thoughts of suicide. He cannot cope with his guilt and will probably never be able to walk properly again because of the spinal cord injury he sustained in the crash. Professor Alexander Vollmers, a renowned neurosurgeon from Konstanz and a good friend of the Brinkmann family, is promptly summoned to the Black Forest Clinic. Using a new surgical method—one that is only available at his clinic in Konstanz—he manages to give Martin hope of a full recovery. In the end, Benjamin and Sophie marry as planned on the island of Mainau. Professor Köhler, medical director of the Black Forest Clinic, also makes a surprise appearance at the wedding celebrations. He has brought Benjamin a special wedding gift: he assures him that he will now get the vacant senior physician position at the hospital.
