Doctors at a financially troubled Black Forest hospital race to preserve its future while caring for patients facing personal crises.

The story

Rumors of a sale unsettle the doctors and nursing staff at the Black Forest Clinic. Dr. Benjamin Brinkmann and his wife, Dr. Sophie Brinkmann, investigate and learn from clinic director Professor Köhler that financial problems have led him to seek investors. Without them, the hospital may be privatized and turned into a rehabilitation center or retirement home. Meanwhile, Professor Udo Brinkmann arrives from Munich and steps into a rescue operation, while facing upheaval in his private life and the challenges of a teenage patient who appears to be paralyzed after a riding accident. The clinic’s future and its patients’ needs converge as the staff confront change.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

There is great excitement among the doctors and nursing staff at the Black Forest Clinic over an alleged sale of the hospital. Dr. Benjamin Brinkmann and his wife, Dr. Sophie Brinkmann, want to get to the bottom of the rumors. They learn from the clinic director, Professor Köhler, that the clinic had already run into financial difficulties several months earlier and that he is now looking for investors. Otherwise, the Black Forest Clinic will be privatized and converted either into a rehabilitation center or a retirement home. Mischa, who lives in Berlin and whose daughter is currently undergoing rehabilitation at a clinic in the Black Forest, visits Senior Nurse Hildegard. The newly appointed Professor Udo Brinkmann also comes to visit from Munich. He immediately steps in during a rescue operation and performs surgery. Udo has also had to cope with several setbacks in his private life recently: first, his wife Elke suffered a miscarriage, and a few months later she left him and moved to Austria. Udo also has to deal with a teenage patient who appears to be paralyzed and dependent on a wheelchair after a riding accident. In time, Udo discovers that Amelie has only psychogenic paralysis and is not paralyzed from the waist down. The heavily pregnant Mrs. Bieler is admitted to the Black Forest Clinic. Sophie saves her newborn daughter, but Mrs. Bieler dies shortly after giving birth. The autopsy reveals that Mrs. Bieler had a congenital heart defect, which she had concealed because otherwise she would never have been allowed to become pregnant. Mr. Bieler is then beside himself with anger. He works as a long-haul truck driver and feels he is not suited to raising his daughter alone. Sophie and Benjamin, however, talk some sense into him and gradually manage to dispel his doubts. Udo, meanwhile, succeeds in presenting a comprehensive plan to the new administrative director, Anna Peters, in his newly appointed role as clinic director by the board of trustees. This prevents the threatened privatization of the Black Forest Clinic, though not without some losses. The ENT department at the clinic is closed, and all employees initially have to accept a 20 percent pay cut. Udo now feels that he made the right decision to leave everything behind in Munich, return home to the Black Forest, and follow in his father's footsteps there.
