The story
Hauston Briarfield and Jack Neville are competing for a vacant Senate seat. Briarfield is the stepbrother of Neville’s fiancée, Oliva, a singer whose inheritance Briarfield once withheld through a concealed will. A sinister figure named Sprague discovers Briarfield’s embezzlement and threatens to expose him unless he hands over the entire inheritance. The escalating scheme draws detective Stuart Webbs into the affair, where political ambitions, blackmail, and Oliva’s claim to her money collide.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two men, Hauston Briarfield and Jack Neville, are in fierce competition for the election to a vacant Senate seat. Briarfield is the stepbrother of Neville’s fiancée, Oliva. He once withheld a will, thereby cheating the singer out of her inheritance. Then a third man enters the picture: a sinister character named Sprague. He knows about Briarfield’s embezzlement and blackmails him with it. If Briarfield does not hand over the entire inheritance, Sprague will make sure everything comes to light, and Briarfield can then bury all his political ambitions. It is a case for Stuart Webbs: he exposes both villains, saves Oliva’s inheritance, and ensures that Briarfield gives up the Senate seat in Neville’s favor.
