The story

Aboard a Mississippi steamboat, Old Shatterhand meets the wanted bandit Cornel Brinkley, who conceals his red hair beneath a black wig. Hobble-Frank and Tante Droll accompany Shatterhand as he sets out to deliver a treasure map—the legacy of Chief Great Bear—to the chief’s tribe. The map points to gold at Silver Lake, and Brinkley tries to steal it. Winnetou comes to the travelers’ aid. Later, Brinkley and his men target railroad workers’ payroll in Sheridan, bringing the bandits into conflict with Winnetou and Old Shatterhand.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Aboard a Mississippi steamboat, the “Westerner” Old Shatterhand meets the bandit “Cornel” Brinkley, who is already wanted on a poster and therefore hides his red hair beneath a black wig. Hobble-Frank and Tante Droll accompany Old Shatterhand to deliver a treasure map—the legacy of Chief Great Bear—to the chief’s tribe. The map marks a gold treasure in Silver Lake. When Brinkley learns of it, he tries to steal the map from the three Westerners. Chief Winnetou comes to their aid. The bandits then try to rob the railroad workers’ payroll in Sheridan, but Winnetou and Old Shatterhand see to their arrest. They hand Brinkley and his men over to the military, but the bandits escape and steal several horses from the Utah tribe. The Great Wolf (called Gray Wolf in the German dub) then swears revenge and suspects Shatterhand and his friends, but they manage to escape the vengeful Indians. At the lake, the showdown takes place: Brinkley betrays and kills the tramps. He then drowns in Silver Lake himself before he can escape by canoe with the Tonkawa treasure. Winnetou and Old Shatterhand smoke the peace pipe with the Indians and their friends.
